EU Introduces Universal USB-C Charging Rules for Electronics
New EU rules mandating a common USB-C charging port for mobile phones and other electronic devices have officially come into effect.
The legislation requires devices such as smartphones, digital cameras, headphones, and handheld gaming consoles to adopt USB-C ports, eliminating the need for multiple, device-specific chargers. Consumers can now charge their gadgets with any compatible USB-C charger.
Approved by the European Parliament in 2022, the directive is expected to save consumers approximately €250 million annually, according to European Commission estimates. It also ensures consistent charging speeds when using compatible chargers and mandates clear information on charging performance at the point of purchase.
Laptops, however, are exempt from the new rules until April 28, 2026, to allow manufacturers time to redesign and transition to the universal charging standard.
